What to Expect:

Join us for a truly rock-reflective evening as Phil Chang presents “Another Way to Look at Stones,” an in-depth exploration of the art and beauty of Viewing Stones. Phil has been a longtime member of Aiseki Kai and has spent over 20 years studying and collecting these remarkable natural treasures.

Viewing Stones — also known as suiseki — are stones that evoke the spirit of vast landscapes: towering mountains, quiet coastlines, cascading waterfalls, and more. Their power lies in how a simple stone can capture the imagination and transport the viewer into a larger world.

What’s in store:

Phil will introduce the traditional classifications of viewing stones, including Chin Seki and Bi Seki, and will showcase how these stones are displayed on:

• Carved wooden bases called “diza
• Sand-filled trays known as “suiban
• Graceful wooden platforms called “jita

He will also share pieces from his personal collection and discuss the appreciation, artistry, and philosophy behind this timeless practice.

Get Involved!

  • Come ready to learn, admire, and be inspired by the subtle beauty of natural stone art.
