If you would like to learn more about diamonds, you are welcome to attend my Diamond Crystals PowerPoint presentation at the South Bay Mineral & Lapidary Society meeting Tuesday May 7 at 6:00 PM. It is open to the public and held at the Torrance Library Meeting Room in Torrance, California. The admission and parking are free.

The diamond octahedron is the highest priced shape for a diamond crystal. It can be cut into two diamonds and yields the most weight. This diamond octahedron (10.82 carats) is from Pala International (www.palagems.com & www.palaminerals.com). It was photographed by Jason Stephenson.

Diamonds were discovered in California in 1849 by prospectors panning for gold. This was about 18 years before the discovery of diamonds in South Africa. Besides briefly indicating the types of diamond crystals found in California, My PowerPoint will include images and information on:

  • Where you can find diamonds in the U. S.
  • What American diamonds look like in the rough in order to help you spot them while prospecting and rockhounding
  • The five basic diamond crystal types and their relative value from highest priced to lowest priced
  • The most important diamond sources beginning with India and ending with Canada
  • The most significant discoveries of rough diamond crystals
  • De Beers’ program to help artisanal miners sell diamonds ethically that are traceable from mine to market

More info on diamond crystals and diamond mining is in my latest book, “Diamonds: Their History, Sources, Qualities and Benefits”. www.reneenewman.com/diamonds.htm
